SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - DEC. 21, 2011: Coit Tower is a beacon on the San Francisco skyline and the pride of the city's Telegraph Hill neighborhood. Built in 1933, its cast-concrete exterior soaks up the elements to which it is exposed, and the Depression-era murals that line the Tower's interior walls are in need of renovation. Allison Cummings, Senior Registrar for the city's civic arts collection, described the art deco structure as "basically like a sponge." Local residents oppose a city plan to raise funds for the renovation of the water-damaged frescoes by hosting private parties on top of the Tower. Dave Getzschman For the Times
