Obama Campaigning for Claire McCaskill in Missouri

On the eve of a Congressional election that would determine the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama rallied support for Claire McCaskill, a Democrat attempting to unseat Sen. Jim Talent, R-Mo., in St. Louis, Mo. on Nov. 5, 2006. Following an electrifying 2004 Democratic National Convention speech and a subsequent best-selling autobiography, Obama's popularity surged, and he was considered a front-runner for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Presidency in 2008. His wide appeal was seen as crucial to Democratic efforts to retake the House and Senate, and he stumped for fellow Democrats at similar campaign events around the country.
