A recent study examining the phenomenon of day labor in America found approximately 117,600 workers gathering at 500 sites nationwide, looking for employment. Assembling on busy street corners and in front of home improvement stores, the laborers are mostly men, recently immigrated from Mexico and Central America, who lack legal documentation and need to establish an income in their new surroundings. They work a variety of jobs requiring tedious physical labor in an environment rife with wage theft, hazardous working conditions and improper safety precautions, all for a median hourly wage of $10.
